When the seasons change so too must how we care for our skin – but how exactly do we do that now that the weather is turning from cold to hot, hot, hot?
We turned to founder and CEO of Dr. Barbara Sturm, Dr. Barbara Sturm, to find out.
“Skin is especially dry and dull after the long winter period due to a decrease of sebum production, which is a result of insufficient blood supply in the outer layers of our skin, exposure to cold, wind and extreme temperatures, and dry indoor heating,” says Dr. Sturm. “As the weather gets warmer, you need to replenish your moisture reservoirs and rebuild your lipid shield and skin barrier function.”
She goes on to note that now is a great time for a skin reset. “Your skincare regimen needs only to include a cleanser, an exfoliator twice a week – like my facial scrub to gently slough off dead skin and impurities, a Vitamin C-based serum like The Good C Vitamin C Serum, a face cream and broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. This covers the skin’s fundamental needs for springtime skin.”
Resetting skin from the inside-out is also important. “For this, I invented supplements geared to skin health. I recommend my Skin Super Anti-Aging and Skin Protection – the adaptogens it contains help the body contend with environmental stressors including spring-time pollen as well as external aggressors such as HEV light and pollution – twice every day, and my Skin Recovery once a day.”
As it starts to get warmer with sunnier days ahead, skin becomes more prone to hyperpigmentation and that’s when Dr. Sturm suggests introducing a vitamin C-based serum to help brighten the complexion. “Regular use of Vitamin C skincare helps reduce the signs of irritation and uneven pigmentation and provides anti-oxidative protection from environmental stressors.”
Further, she notees, that during the spring and summer, you want to be using a moisturizer that is super hydrating but also light enough to prevent the skin from becoming too oily. I recommend swapping out your heavier face creams for a light one like Face Cream Light.”
